There are a lot of different people that experience panic attacks, and they are brought on by a number of things. One common question is can alcohol cause panic attacks. While alcohol may not be the only factor in a panic attack, it can certainly make them worse. Many people drink alcohol to calm them down, however alcohol is a substance which can have many different effects on the person that consumes it.

One person can drink alcohol and be perfectly calm, while others find themselves becoming anxious, stressing out for no apparent reason. No doctor would ever recommend you drink alcohol for anxiety, in fact just the opposite. If you want to avoid panic attacks then avoiding alcohol would be a considerably wise choice. Alcohol adversely effects in the body in many different ways, including the nervous system. When alcohol enters the body, the body's nervous system becomes hyperactive to try to fight the sedative effects the alcohol produces.

Alcohol cause panic attacks by increasing heart rate as well. The more alcohol you consume, the faster your heart begins to beat per second. Fast rate beat is a hallmark of a panic attack in almost everyone who experiences them. Alcohol also causes dehydration which does not help in fighting off a panic attack. When you consume alcohol the blood/sugar level in your body tends to drop, often times causing such symptoms as dizziness, weakness, and shaking. These are all common symptoms of panic attacks. Doctors still aren't sure whether or not alcohol actually causes panic attacks, but it can most definitely increase the intensity of one or set one off if the person who is drinking the alcohol is already prone to having one. The best thing you can do is to stay on the safe side and avoid alcohol completely or at very least limit the amount you consume on a regular basis.
